Road Construction

Each year, the City of Kitchener undertakes construction projects to improve and upgrade many of our local roads to ensure they're capable of handling the increased usage and volumes that come with a growing city.

Minor Reconstruction

In some cases, we simply resurface a worn, cracked road surface - short-term projects that require contractors to:

  • Grind up existing asphalt

  • Repair curbs as required

  • Lay new asphalt

Major Reconstruction

In other cases, more extensive work is required to replace outdated infrastructure. These projects are undertaken when the infrastructure is starting to wear or fail, or it's no longer able to handle current volumes - be it water, waste or traffic.

Buried infrastructure systems supply important municipal and utility services to your home, including:

  • Clean water supply, provided by a water main.

  • Dirty water removal, provided by a sanitary sewer main.

  • Rainwater, groundwater and snowmelt-water removal, provided by a storm-sewer main.

  • Natural-gas supply, provided by a gas main.

  • Electricity supply

  • Telecommunications services - including telephone, television and Internet, if not supplied by overhead poles and wires.

Once the required services have been repaired or replaced, the road structure - made of compacted gravel - is reconstructed to provide a sturdy base for the new road surface.

Full reconstruction projects can take between six and 18 weeks to complete, depending on the scope.

Keeping the Community Informed

Residents and businesses in the construction area receive notification in writing prior to the start of construction. Information packages are provided, containing details on the specific project, as well as information about garbage collection, street closures and parking during the construction period; as well as contact information for the city project manager and contractor, in case they have any questions or concerns.

We also provide a list of our road closures.
