Playing our part to stimulate the economy
Sewer and Watermain Rehabilitation
The city was awarded $1,666,667 in federal and provincial infrastructure funding, to rehabilitate buried sewer main and water main infrastructure. The city also contributed $833,333 in funding, which means the total amount allocated for this project was $2.5 million.
Project Background
The sanitary and water main rehabilitation project took placeĀ in parts of the Forest Hill community.
By using trenchless rehabilitation methods, the city has been able to extend the lifespan of this infrastructure by 25 to 50 years at a cost that is less than traditional open-cut reconstruction/replacement. Techniques that will be used include pipe bursting and pipe lining.
Trenchless rehabilitation techniques offer the city the ability to address more infrastructure in a shorter period of time, at less cost and social disruption than traditional reconstruction/replacement methods.
Environmental benefits include reducing leakage in the buried pipes of both infrastructure types. This will reduce the wastage of potable water through water main leaks into the ground; and reduce groundwater leaking into sewer mains. This will in turn reduce the demand for water supply and treatment, and sewage processing.
