Playing our part to stimulate the economy

Centre in the Square Improvements

The Centre in the Square was awarded $800,000 in federal and provincial infrastructure funding, which has been used to rehabilitate sections of the theatre to modernize and extend the life of the facility. The city also contributed $400,000 in funding, which means the total amount allocated for this project was $1.2 million. In the end, only $1.18 million was used to complete this project.

A celebration was heald in November 2011, marking the completion of the project.

Project background

The three-way funding partnership has enhanced the centre by:

  • Creating a new access road on the property for patron drop-off;
  • Upgrading seating in main performance space;
  • Creating new performance space from rehearsal hall;
  • Creating new, smaller performance space near entrance;
  • Upgrading the water and drainage system for the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, which is located inside the centre;
  • Creating retail space in the lobby;
  • Replacing office lighting with energy-efficient models;
  • Replacing lobby carpets.

Completion of this project facilitates access to live performance and art gallery
space for all patrons; while increasing patron comfort through refurbished seating and lobby space. Upgrading the building's rehearsal space will accommodate a Canadian Play series, community groups and a multicultural festival.

Retrofitting the office lighting and upgrading the water and drainage systems will save 160,000 kW of power per year.
