Solar Roof

Taking another step toward reducing greenhouse gases and improving local air quality, we recently unveiled the installation of a 68,000 square foot solar roof on the Kitchener Operations Facility - a major achievement in our plan to become more environmentally sustainable.

The 500-kilowatt installation -  consisting of 2,500 photovoltaic solar panels, with each producing 200 W of power -  will allow us to generate electricity directly from the sun and contribute to the region's electricity grid. This will create enough energy to power 50 homes.

In addition to the wide range of environmental benefits owning and operating our own alternative power provider will bring, doing so will also diversify our electricity supply through the application of leading-edge energy-generation technology -- in a cost effective manner.

The governments of Canada and Ontario and the City of Kitchener have each committed approximately $1.37 million toward eligible costs for the installation of the Kitchener Operations Facility solar roof. The total eligible cost for the roof project is $4.1 million.

The solar roof is expected to generate more than $363,900 in net revenue for the city each year - and more than $3.5 million over the course two decades with the Ontario Power Authority.
