Kitchener city council approved the 2012 operating budget on January 19. The budget includes a property tax increase of 1.41 per cent. Factoring in the city's annual contribution to the economic development investment fund (EDIF), this equates to an increase of 2.39 per cent or $23 per year - for the average household.
Through careful collaboration, city council managed to reduce the initial projected increase of 3.87 per cent, underscoring their collective commitment to balance the need to provide valued services and programs to residents, while maintaining a reasonable level of property taxation and preserving the city's long-term financial well-being.
In an effort to minimize the projected property tax increase, the following measures were adopted for the 2012 budget:
